Philipp Wollscheid’s career looks to be in doldrums at the moment, as the German defender has found it quite tough to make it into the first team for Wolfsburg in the German Bundesliga, while not finding any success in attracting any interest from any other club from anywhere in Europe. He is now scheduled to make a return to his parent club Stoke City as the season has concluded and his loan term is over at the German club.
Wollscheid was loaned out to Wolfsburg after having appeared in only two matches, in the recent season for the Potters, during the mid-season transfer window, for more exposure to first team football. However, the 28 year old defender made only six first team appearances for the German club and failed utterly to impress in the outings he had under his belt.
It is quite unlikely that Mark Hughes, who is already under fire for his decisions that led his team to finish in a lowly thirteenth place in the league table this year, will take any risk with the inclusion of the German defender into his squad in the next season. The player has been out of form and evidently there has been a lack of potential suitors for him who are willing to add him to their squad.
The Potters are looking to sell off Wollscheid to any buyer who comes their way, and are reportedly ready to listen to offers at a price which might be also lowered by the club management who are desperate to get rid of him.
In fact, Mark Hughes has been looking to offload a number of players who have failed to impress in this term and is much more interested in bringing in players who can turn the tide in their favour by helping them have a good start to the next season.
Stoke City have already cleared their intention to make a strong squad for the next campaign, having signed one of the most experienced campaigners currently playing in the Premier League, the Scottish midfield enforcer Darren Fletcher.
Instrumental in his display with his former club West Bromwich Albion, the ex-Manchester United player, who had one more season left on his contract with the Baggies, was roped in by the Potters to stabilise their midfield in the next season. Apart from Wollscheid, players like midfielder Glenn Whelan and striker Gianelli Imbula might also be shown the door this summer to freshen things up at the Bet365 Stadium.
