Everton might make a move for St Etienne defender Florentin Pogba who happens to be the brother of Manchester United midfielder Paul Pogba. The Toffees are actively looking for substantial reinforcements, especially in the defence.
The Guinea international has emerged as a shock target for Ronald Koeman who has been looking for new talents to bolster his defence. Manchester United brought Paul Pogba from Juventus in the last summer after smashing the world record fee and his brother could soon follow him to the English soil.
Primarily a central defender, Pogba can also be used on the left side of the defence. He has featured just 17 times in the last season and a move is realistically possible. He wouldn’t cost much as Everton can seriously pursue their interest for him.
Everton will have to fight with RB Leipzig for his services as the German club also reportedly have an interest in the player. The defender only has a year left on his contract so that shouldn’t be a problem for the Toffees.
Ramiro Funes Mori is currently injured and Phil Jagielka is in the twilight of his career. Koeman wants a reliable but affordable defender and Pogba ticks all the boxes. He has a physical presence to match up with the Premier League attackers and can thrive in the new surroundings. He has previously been linked with Arsenal but the rumour cooled down very soon.
Pogba has a knack of picking up silly injuries but if he can work on his fitness he could prove to be a vital cog for the Merseyside club. Florentin has lent a solidity to the St Etienne backline for a brief period but it is the right time for him to test his mettle and what could be better than a move to the English Premier League.
Pogba faced his junior brother Paul in the Europa League but the latter’s club emerged as the winners as United went on to lift the title. He could have been playing for the Black Cats as David Moyes was considering a move for the defender in 2016. But nothing materialised and he kept on playing for the French club.
Everton could land a bargain deal if they do manage to grab him from the French club. The lure to play against his younger brother might sound tempting for him and he would also love to have a go in a new environment. Koeman needs to seal a deal for him as soon as possible.
