Mamadou Sakho’s estranged relationship with Jurgen Klopp is not unknown as the German manager kept him out for the most part of the first half as he had a row with the defender. Firstly the matter started when the player was banned by FIFA for allegedly taking a banned substance. He was later cleared of the charge but the damage had been initiated already.
He later reported late for the pre-season a number of times which caused further outrage from Klopp. He also made a Snapchat video which further ruined matters and Klopp banished him from first team activities and despite repeated attempts by Sakho, he didn’t pay heed to him.
In the second part of the season, Klopp seemed to have a little change of mind and sent the player to Crystal Palace on loan. To everyone’s surprise, Sakho excelled in his role as he led the Eagles backline from the front as Sam Allardyce’s side gave a very commendable performance.
Southampton
With Virgil Van Dijk’s transfer in doldrums, Southampton are seemingly assured as of now. But the Dutch defender is still in jeopardy and hasn’t taken a decision on his future. The defender has been in demand and might leave St Marys. Liverpool were deemed favourites to sign the player but they apparently fell foul of the rules and thus had to furnish an official apology before withdrawing their interest in the player.
Van Dijk is still is on the radar of a number of clubs and if he leaves the South Coast club, they might approach Sakho who will be available. Klopp is unlikely to keep the player and he will be open to offers. Sakho still holds authority over his form and could prove to be an essential signing for the club.
Crystal Palace
Sakho had a pretty fruitful outing with the club as he revived his career under the guidance of Sam Allardyce. Palace made attempts to sign the defender but Liverpool’s valuation of £30m forced them to back out. They still can sign the player but Palace chairman Steve Parish claimed they cannot match their price.
However, having played for Palace, a move for the French defender shouldn’t be counted out totally and Palace should stick at this.
Newcastle United
The Magpies have been searching a defender as Rafa Benitez is looking for an accomplished player to bolster his backline in the Premier League. He wants a formidable leader in the team and bringing Sakho would fulfil his objective.
