Chelsea are reportedly interested in Wolverhampton’s attacker Helder Costa. The winger has created an excitement among the top flight clubs with his performances in his inaugural season on English soil. The 23-year-old has been in demand as the likes of Arsenal and Chelsea are reportedly planning a move for him.
Costa moved to Wolves in the winter transfer window for a fee of £13m which is a club record. He had been with the club for a brief loan spell and after impressing in the initial phases, the hierarchy decided to make his move permanent.
Costa featured in 35 games in the Championship and despite his club’s poor performances, he continued to be the most shining performer for the Molineux-based side. In a season that boasts of disappointments, Costa has been the sole, attractive performer for the Wanderers as he went on to find the net 10 times. He also further contributed to eight goals in the Championship which justified the interest in him.
Costa particularly caught the headlines with his scintillating performance against Liverpool in the FA Cup. He was behind the two goals they scored, as the Wolves shocked Liverpool by getting the better off them in a 2-1 victory. He was also adjudged ‘the player of the season’ by his club for his excellence.
Wolves managing director Laurie Dalrymple has already given a major hint that if the situation persists, they might think of cashing on him and that he is valued at roughly £20m by the club. “I can’t sit here and definitely say he’s going absolutely nowhere because I don’t know what’s around the corner in four week’s time,” he said in a recent interview.
Antonio Conte wants to build a team which will challenge for roughly every trophy that is available and for that, he needs to perfect his team balance. Chelsea lifted the Premier League title last season and this has made Conte a bit more confident going into the next season.
Costa had struggled in the earlier stages of his Wolves career as he had to spend a large chunk of time on the reserve bench. But once he got the chance, he made it sure that he doesn’t look back.
There will be some concern if he does move to Chelsea as the player has barely had a season under his belt for Wolves and a move for him could backfire. He also hasn’t been able to replicate this kind of form for other clubs and before making a move, Conte has to make sure that he will excel at the Bridge.
