Antonio Conte has some serious plans for his title-winning Chelsea side as he is looking to add some top class players to his squad this summer. The manager wants to improve on more than one position in the squad and has been linked with some of the best players in Europe for each position. But one player who he now has an eye on is Southampton full-back, Ryan Bertrand.
The Saints had a decent season under Claude Puel, who is now sacked and Bertrand was one of the many players who were consistent in their duties last season. However, according to The Mirror, the English international has now told his pals that he will be shifting clubs this summer.
With three goals and five assists in 34 appearances in all competitions to his name, Bertrand is easily one of the most dependable left-backs around in England and there is no shortage of clubs who are ready to make a move for him this summer. Liverpool and Manchester City are closely monitoring his situation but it is understood that Chelsea are desperate for his signature.
A left-back by trait, Bertrand is one of the most experienced players in England in this position, having played for eight different clubs in the country in his career. He was a part of the Chelsea youth academy back in 2005-2006 and was only sold permanently to Southampton in 2015. He spent 10 years on loan at five different clubs and has also established himself as an integral part of the Three Lions squad.
Equipped with a thunderous shot, Bertrand loves to spend time in the final third but is more than capable of sitting back and helping his defence out when needed. He is strong in the air and stays ahead of the game for most times, making him a genuine option for the Champions of England.
Conte has used Italian star Marcos Alonso, who is a similar player to Bertrand, in a wing-back role on the left flank this season. Alonso is expected to be the first choice next season as well but Chelsea hardly have a backup for him in the first team and Conte wants the 27-year old Southampton man to be a part of his squad next season.
At his age, he is experienced and can also cover for Alonso in the first team when needed. He will not cost over the moon so Chelsea will have to work hard and quick if they are to sign him, with Manchester City also desperate for his services.
