Chelsea are right now in two minds as they are weighing their options about the future of Nemanja Matic and Cesc Fabregas. Both the player have been linked with a number of clubs but the West London side are yet to take a decision.
The two players have their own playing style as they are completely different to each other. They have complemented each other beautifully under Jose Mourinho when the West London side went on to lift the title in 2014/15 season.
Fabregas has had very limited opportunities this season compared to the last season where he was the preferred choice. But he has done seemingly better this season despite having very limited game time. He has been a peripheral figure under Antonio Conte as the Italian gaffer has mostly preferred the pairing of Matic and N’Golo Kante in the middle of the pitch.
Antonio Conte has reportedly had some issues with the board as the Italian is not happy with Chelsea’s transfer policy. He has issued an ultimatum regarding the Romelu Lukaku saga as time is running out for them.
It’s been hard for Conte to find a place for Fabregas in his 3-4-3 formation. In this setup, the midfield players have to take extra responsibilities to control the dynamism of the side as they have to often protect the wingbacks.
Matic’s attacking ability might not be that strong but his defensive attributes are amongst the best in the business. In the 2014/15 season, Matic was handed the responsibility to provide the backline with a extra layer of security and he did that with sheer perfection. Fabregas is far superior attacking wise but his defensive antics are not that good.
Nowadays if you need to survive in the Premier League you have to be versatile as a whole and knowing that Fabregas started to press the accelerator pedal in the last few matches. The Spaniard who is known as a laid-back and classy midfielder had increased his work rate and even won the accolades of his manager.
But when it comes to providing balance to the team, Matic is a bit ahead than Fabregas. With the likes of Eden Hazard, Willian and Pedro in the team, Matic had proved his credentials as the attackers played their game pretty fluently while the Serbian enforcer provided insurance in the middle. Also, the emergence of Kante wouldn’t have been possible without the assistance of this bombastic midfielder.
So Chelsea need to ensure that the Serbian stays at the Stamford Bridge for another season.
