Celtic bulldozed ruthlessly past their opponents in the Scottish domestic competitions last season with relative ease as they went on to clinch the domestic treble in a grand manner. Brendan Rodgers masterminded in what eventually turned out to be a spectacular campaign and it goes without saying that the Hoops would be eager to continue such a fine run of form in the upcoming season and would strive to carve a strong footing in the Champions League as well.
One of the most appealing aspects under the tutelage of Rodgers has been the rise of the young guns he had at his disposal the last term. The former Liverpool and Swansea City boss allowed the youngsters to blossom in a fully fledged manner and the likes of Kieran Tierney, Moussa Dembele and Patrick Roberts chiselled very productive outputs to ink a name for themselves in the good books of football fraternity. Rodgers is seemingly likely to bring quality starlets under his stewardship over the course of the summer transfer window.
One of the players to have found a name for himself in his wish-list is Liverpool’s talented defender Joe Gomez. Having joined the Reds in 2015, a serious cruciate ligament injury hindered his progress to a humungous extent. The 20-year-old failed to accumulate even a single Premier League game last season merely 3 appearances in the FA Cup were the only first-team opportunities he could manoeuvre. He is at that stage of his career where he needs to pile much more time on the pitch to brush up his calibre and that appears to be unlikely as this stroke of the hour for him at Liverpool.
Gomez boasts of a strong physical presence and apart from plying his trade at the heart of the backline, he is versatile enough to be stationed on both the fullback positions. He is good in the air, doesn’t refrain from getting into tight areas and has the requisite strength, stamina and pace on offer. Besides, he has the technical edge and doesn’t commit himself to rough or unwanted tackles and is a cool customer at the back. Although he is young, he has shown immense maturity while playing for Charlton Athletic and Liverpool and is a compelling target for any good quality side.
Jurgen Klopp already has the likes of Joel Matip, Ragnar Klavan and Dejan Lovren in his arsenal and with the anticipated arrival of another centre-back means that the competition for earning a spot in the starting line-up of Klopp could have a detrimental effect on the growth and development of Gomez. A move to Celtic Park should personally appeal him, although a loan deal should be a beneficial one for all the parties involved.
