The carnival atmosphere in and around the Macron Stadium gives us the testament that Bolton Wanderers have emerged from the doldrums. Under the tutelage of Phil Parkinson, the Wanderers slowly but surely went on to construct a strong momentum for themselves in League One last season and finished 2nd in the league chart, thus earning themselves a promotion to the Championship. They have thoroughly earned the plaudits they have been getting and it is time now to think about the step forward.
Now that they are all set to ply their trade in the English second division, Parkinson would be keen to mould a strong team for himself so that he could steer the club back to the top division. Of course, they do not possess the strongest of financial muscles and thus, would have to look for cheap yet promising signings and intend to derive the best out the summer transfer window and one of the players to have fallen on the radar of the Whites is Sammy Ameobi.
Ameobi was one of the players to be released by Newcastle United of late as he failed to impress Rafael Benitez, who implied by releasing him that he isn’t a commodity to ply his trade in the Premier League. The 25-year-old plied his trade with Bolton Wanderers during the first half of the 2016-17 campaign of League One and owing to the financial woes, a return for the second half of the season never materialised. However, considering the reports that have emerged, it seems like he could be heading back to the ranks of Parkinson on a permanent basis this time around.
Ameobi mustered 20 appearances to his name and despite scoring merely 2 goals (which aren’t groundbreaking statistics), he is well acclimatised with the manner in which the Trotters operate. He played on the right wing for Bolton Wanderers and did find a consistent footing for himself, and no wonder why Parkinson is attempting for a reunion. Apart from Premier League experience, the winger had been with Cardiff City and Middlesbrough in the Championship on loan deals in the past and at the onset, his move to Bolton Wanderers would make some sense.
The former Newcastle United man is a decent dribbler, covers acres of the pitch to make defensive contributions and is quite sound in the air. Besides, he tackles well and gets into the scheme of things in the offensive game plan of his employers in the final third as well. Moreover, he has years of competitive football left in him and taking a step towards the Championship would not only render him a good opportunity in getting game time under his belt but will also enable Bolton Wanderers in beefing their squad for the upcoming seasons.
