Tottenham Hotspur fans were thrown into disarray when their star player of the last season, Christian Eriksen, reportedly expressed his delight at being linked with La Liga giants Barcelona. The Danish international has been in prolific form for the Lilywhites in the season gone, playing a significant role in helping them finish second in the Premier League. His brilliant displays have caught the attention of numerous top clubs across Europe.
After an almost complete sweep of the silverwares by archrivals Real Madrid, which saw Barcelona settle for a Copa del Rey only, the Catalans are definitely eyeing a comeback next season. And with new manager Ernesto Valverde at the helm now, the club is looking to make a statement as early as in the summer. According to reports, Barcelona are eyeing a huge move for Eriksen, widely considered as one of the best attacking midfielders in the world at the moment.
Tottenham’s new rise to prominence was feared to play a huge factor in stopping the player from moving out of the club anytime in the near future. But Spurs’ star playmaker had different things to say.
Speaking to Danish newspaper Ekstra Bladet, Eriksen said, “Barcelona are a great club and I do not think there are many who say no to Barcelona… “But there is interest and there is definite interest. Before there is concrete interest, I have no opinion on it… In the future, I see myself at the highest level. That’s what I dream about… It may be in another club or it could be Tottenham if we have come all the way up.”
Eriksen was one of the youngsters who had appeared for a trial at Barca before he was turned down and joined Ajax consequently. But, he has come a long way since then and has progressed by leaps and bounds. He has scored 12 goals last season for Spurs and registered a whopping 23 assists in all competitions.
The Lilywhites had brought the Danish youngster from Ajax back in 2013 as a long-term replacement for Luka Modric who left the club for Real Madrid. He has shown similar attributes in the attacking third and Barcelona are in need of such talents at the moment. A number 10 by nature, Eriksen can play on either flank with equal deft.
And given the lack of creators in Nou Camp at the moment, Valverde will be giving him a shot in the upcoming summer window. Making his debut for the national team back in 2010 as an 18-year-old, he has since earned 67 caps for the country, scoring 18 times. He has all the experience at the top level and even got Denmark’s solitary goal in the friendly game against Germany on Wednesday.
