Aston Villa are considering an ambitious move for Chelsea defender, John Terry. The 36-year-old is scheduled to leave the Stamford Bridge upon his contract expiration at the start of July. One of the most decorated players in Chelsea’s history, Terry has fallen in the pecking order as Antonio Conte preferred a three-man backline throughout the last season.
Many would have thought that the veteran defender would call time on his playing career but instead of that, he had made it clear he would like to carry on playing even after leaving the West London club.
Villa boss Steve Bruce met the defender in Portugal where the two shared some moments on the golf course. They were seen playing golf together in Portugal and the Villa gaffer made a very lucrative offer to the player.
The Championship side have been struggling for quite a while and Bruce is very adamant to revive their fortunes in the next term. They failed to do justice with their name as the Midlands side finished in the 13th place despite having a very convincing squad.
Bournemouth have also offered Terry a very attractive offer with wages around £100,000 a week. The Cherries had a very solid campaign and Eddie Howe wants to push his team further in the next season. But they have been missing a leader on the pitch and Howe thinks Terry can lead the team from the back.
The veteran player might have got an indication that it was going to be his last stint with the club as he was kept aside for a brief period by Conte. He appeared in just nine Premier League matches but a player like him wants to get involved in more matches. That’s why Terry has decided to leave his beloved club and wants to take a different challenge outside the club.
He is also believed to be interested in coaching roles but as of now playing football is his priority. The defender has won every trophy available in England and would be gearing up for a new challenge in the Championship. Villa have their financial problems but owner Dr Tony Xia is ready to fund Terry’s move. The player will also be offered a huge incentive if the club gets promoted to the Premier League.
A natural leader, Terry’s leadership might inspire the existing Villa players to grind out their best in the English second tier next season. It remains to be seen whether Terry takes a drop down to the Championship or remains in the Premier League.
