It was an evening of triumph at Wembley, as Arsenal defeated Chelsea in the FA Cup final to win it for a record 13th time. It goes without saying that the emphatic win over this season’s Premier League champions Chelsea came as a relief for the Arsenal players as well as their coach Arsene Wenger. Especially after a rather disappointing season in which they failed to finish in the top four to miss the Champions League for the next term.
Demands are now growing stronger for the removal of Arsene Wenger from the post of the head coach among the Arsenal fans. The Frenchman has not been able to win the Premier League since 2004, apart from not being able to make it to the finals of any major European competition as well.
This has evidently infuriated a major section of the fans, who want the present Gunners’ coach to be ousted from his post and have someone else take the charge.
However, after the gallant win in the FA Cup, the French tactician’s reign at the North London club is looking far from over. In fact, recent reports suggest that Wenger is on course to pen down a new two-year deal. His current contract with the club was due to expire at the end of the season.
This time around though, the club is set to appoint a new sporting director and the Frenchman will have to work with him at Arsenal. The club has declared that this step they have taken is with a view to offloading some of the burdens Wenger has been carrying since his arrival at the Emirates. This will, however, also restrict the free role that he has been playing at the club so far throughout his career.
Arsene Wenger undeniably has been a great influencer for the players at the club and a number of them have thrived under the benevolent tutelage of the Frenchman, one of them being the Arsenal legend Thierry Henry, who was brought into the club by his French compatriot.
Talking about his future with the club, Arsene Wenger said that it has to be a decision from the Board of the Directors about his future at the club. He has also said that it will be unfair to judge him depending on the result of a single game, as that will demean his achievements with Arsenal for the last 20 years. But having won silverware yet again, do you think he should be offered a new deal?
