The latest team to join the race to land Fulham’s teen sensation Ryan Sessegnon this summer, is Tottenham Hotspur, as per reports. The 17-year-old has been one of the hottest prospects in the upcoming transfer window with many top Premier League sides after him and Fulham’s recent exit from the Championship play-offs has added further fuel to the fire.
The North-London side finished second in the Premier League this season in the most prolific way possible as they won against a struggling Hull City side 7-1. Mauricio Pochettino’s men have often been described by many as a complete side in the league and the Argentine manager has little void to fill in the summer transfer season.
However, the biggest blow Spurs got his season was the injury to Danny Rose. The dynamic left-back is expected to miss the start of the next season now as he underwent a surgery on his left knee. The English international last featured for Tottenham back in January when Tottenham were held in a stalemate at the Stadium of Light.
And although Pochettino has found a quality replacement in Ben Davies in the left-back position since then, the 24-year-old Welshman found it difficult to adapt to Pochettino’s shifting back line and needless to say he lacks Rose’s dazzling dribbling abilities and doesn’t fancy the long shots Rose is popular for.
A successful move for Sessegnon could very much solve that problem for Spurs. The Fulham left-back, who can also play in an advanced role with equal ease is a lot like Rose, possessing brilliant dribbling prowess and pace on and off the ball. And most of all, his nascent age would allow Pochettino to nurture him in whatever role he deems fit, which is likely to be an offensive one given his attributes.
Liverpool have reportedly been hot on his heels and also in the driver’s seat to land him, but Spurs chairman Daniel Levy is reportedly in a hurry to sign the youngster before Liverpool and with the Lilywhites having a similar European stature as Liverpool now, the Reds don’t retain any special lure for the player.
Of course, Fulham would be the first block in this deal as the Cottagers are dead against letting their prized asset leave under any condition. However, the fact that he is yet to sign a professional contract with the club means that they will have to leave him for much lesser than they wish to. He is reportedly labelled at £10 million, a sum Tottenham can easily give.
