Everton are one of the few sides in the Premier League, whose purpose in the season is more or less over. The 7th position that Everton are sitting at currently, is more than secured for them unless Arsenal do terribly to get further down the table.
West Bromwich, who are immediately below them, are trailing by 13 points. And with just two games to go, it is impossible to cover it. Arsenal, who are immediately above them, lead them by five points and have four more games left to play this season as compared to their two.
Hence, the 7th spot is pretty much cemented for Ronald Koeman’s men and in all possibility, they have already started planning their squad for next season where Europa League will be an exciting prospect for them. A lot of big names are linked with a move to Goodison Park this summer, which indicates the outflow of a similar magnitude too.
Here are the 3 players, Everton should sell this summer-
Phil Jagielka- The skipper surely made a dramatic comeback to the side quite late in the season when Ramiro Funes Mori was ruled out for the rest of the season. The 34-year-old English international even netted in a few consecutive matches to everyone’s surprise in the last few games, but we don’t think it would be adequate for his stay.
Koeman seems sure with his decision about the centre-half and he is right in all respect. At 34, Jagielka will have little to offer at the top level and it is time the Toffees inject some fresh blood to their backline. Funes Mori and Mason Holgate are leading that charge, and we expect more to come in that position.
Aaron Lennon- It might seem rude to abandon the player in such a time of crisis, but to be fair to the club, Lennon hasn’t been near his best of late. The English winger relies immensely on his pace with the ball and at 30, that is sure to decline.
To top that, injuries have always been a big obstacle in his career. He has managed only 11 games this season, providing only 1 assist. And after his recent arrest owing to mental illness, his professional career is pretty much over.
James McCarthy- The Irish midfielder has been one of the most experienced players at 26 and it would be the best time for the Toffees to dispose of him. With a midfield possessing Morgan Schneiderlin, Idrissa Gueye, Tom Davies, Ross Barkley, Gareth Barry, his place will never be guaranteed, leaving him as a redundant option.
He has managed just 12 outings, scoring and assisting one in them. At 26, he is more injury-plagued than 36-year-old Gareth Barry. Plus, unlike Barry, he would fetch good price to Everton for his prime age.
