After the exciting last season, there was a certain kind of expectations from Southampton but they have failed to cope up with that. The Saints finished the season in a disappointing eighth place. Despite defeating Inter Milan at the St Mary’s in the Europa League, they failed to go through to the next stages of the competition. The departure of Ronald Koeman must have left some void but the arrival of Claude Puel started a new chapter at the St Marys.
They had a mixed season so far but the most disturbing thing in this season was their inconsistency. At one time it was feared that Saints might have to deal with the relegation as they once lost four matches back to back but a late flurry in the form saved their season. The only positive from this year was their run in the EFL Cup. They performed brilliantly in the final but some inexperience in the squad saw them faltering at the crucial stage.
Stars
Manolo Gabbiadini
The Italian forward only scored six goals for the Saints but the kind of impact he showed in this season is very commendable. On multiple occasions, he was the focal point of the Saints attack and adapted himself beautifully to the team. He hasn’t had many chances after a late injury but he will be the player to watch out for.
Ryan Bertrand
The former Chelsea player has been in a productive form of the Saints. He has proved his mettle in the Premier League and has emerged as one of the best left-backs in this Premier League. His influence in the game was very impressive and with time he has seemingly gone on to the next level.
Nathan Redmond
The England international was in the thick of things and has been the leader in the Saints attack. His pace and skill has often created problems for the opposition defenders. He also finished the season with the highest number of goals for his side.
Duds
Sofiane Boufal
Boufal was brought to give a new shape to the Saints attack but he has failed to do so in this season. He has created only a mere 21 chances which is very poor for a player of his stature.
Jay Rodriguez
Failed to do justice to his name and didn’t do the work for what he was famous. He struggled at times and didn’t get into any sort of rhythm at all.
Shane Long
Had a torrid time in front of the goal. He finished the season with an awful 43% shot accuracy. A Player of his stature managed a meagre three goals in the Premier League which is very poor in terms of conversion rate.
