Celtic’s Kieran Tierney has been one of the major talks of the town this season in the Scottish Premiership and quite rightly so. Under the tutelage of Brendan Rodgers, the Bhoys have chiselled a fine pedestal for themselves and have been absolutely ruthless on the domestic soil. With the League Cup and the Scottish Premiership title already in their bag, Rodgers’ men are due to face Aberdeen later this month for the Scottish Cup final, winning which would render them a domestic treble.
It has been intriguing to see the former Liverpool manager handing an adequate amount of opportunities to the young guns he has at his disposal and without any shadow of a doubt, Tierney has emerged as one of the hottest properties which the Scottish football has on offer at this stroke of hour. With excellent performances week in and week out, the 19-year-old sensation has made the left-back slot his very own and has reduced the stature of veteran Celtic defender Emilio Izaguirre’s stature to that of a deputy.
And no wonder why he is being linked to notable English clubs, including Newcastle United. Tierney might have stated that he is happy at the Celtic Park but a player of his calibre would want to ply his trade in the compelling and appealing league like the Premier League. Besides, it was reported recently that Rodgers would welcome bids for the starlet, which implies that he might be tempted to strike Tierney off his books if he is offered the right price. Rafael Benitez would have to strengthen his side as he is set to face the elite clubs of the country once again and the Celtic youth product certainly fits the bill.
Tierney belongs to the exceptional breed of fullbacks who have the audacity of maintaining a fine balance between their offensive and defensive endeavours. He marauds forward time and again, stretches the defence of the opposition, he delivers neat crosses and tracks back to defend with ease. Moreover, he never refrains from making tackles or interceptions, reads the dangers in meticulous fashion and takes an active part in nullifying them and is thus having his name inked in the good books of the football fraternity.
The Magpies do have a decent left-back in the shape of Paul Dummett but if they manage to lure Tierney to St. James’ Park, it would be a huge statement of intent from the club. The Scottish international with not only add to the depth and quality of the Geordies but will also offer himself as a core team member of the club and given his age, he is seemingly likely to see an upward trajectory in his career from here on.
