Newcastle United are reportedly weighing their options in an attempt to sign Leicester City captain Wes Morgan. Newcastle have recently been crowned the ‘Championship’ title and they will be competing in the Premier League next season. However, Rafa Benitez is not happy with how his defence has performed so far and he wants to add substantial reinforcements in the summer transfer window.
Morgan has been a catalyst in Leicester City’s recent success. He led the team from the front as Leicester surprised everyone in the last season as they went on to lift the Premier League title for the first time. Although they have miserably failed to defend their title this term but Morgan has maintained his form despite his team’s failure.
It’s a bit surprising that Benitez has targeted a reasonably old Morgan who is currently 33. But given his current form, he could be a bargain buy if the Toons manage to hijack the player from the King Power Stadium. The defender signed a new deal the last July but the Magpies are confident that they will be able to reach an agreement with the Foxes.
The Jamaican international has a very good vision of the ball and also has a very good aerial presence. The fact that he is 33 years of age might be a hindrance to his move but the likes of Gareth McAuley is very successful even at the age of 37 which could work in his way. Benitez is also considering options to sign Harry Maguire but Morgan tops his shopping list.
Morgan is right now very pleased how his career is shaping right now. The 33-year-old remained a valuable part of the starting lineup as he featured in 27 League games this season. He was also an inevitable part of Leicester’ dream Champions League campaign where the Foxes failed to go past the Quarterfinal barrier. Fitness issues might be a problem as the central defender is in his thirties right now. The Toons do have a number of very good quality centre-backs but competing in the Premier League is a different ball game. Morgan has ample Premier League experience under his belt and he has still some years of football left in him.
Newcastle defence had some very nervy moments in the Championship this season and Benitez needs an overhaul of his defence. The Magpies are aiming to have a good Premier League season up ahead and Morgan could be their first signing in the summer.
