Manchester United are in a spot of bother ahead of the next season. They still have a decent chance of qualifying for the Champions League but they have a tough task in hand in the summer transfer window. Jose Mourinho was already looking for a squad overhaul at the end of the season and is looking at some of the biggest stars to add to the squad at the end of the season. Napoli’s Dries Mertens is now high on the wish list for the Portuguese manager.
Mertens has constantly been linked with a move to the Premier League with Spurs and Arsenal desperate for his signature. He has been linked with a move to Old Trafford but his teammate in Italy, Lorenzo Insigne has now asked the player to snub offers from Manchester United. So, should Mertens stay in Italy? Should United go all in for his signature?
The 29-year old Belgium attacker is one of the most versatile players in Serie A at the moment. Mainly playing on the wing, Mertens has 28 goals and 12 assists in all competitions this season and stands as one of the most productive players in Europe this season.
A genuine winger with exceptional dribbling skills, Mertens loves to cut inside from the left flank to unleash a thumping right foot, that seems to be finding the back of the net consistently. He is one of best dead ball specialists in Europe at the moment. His vision and accuracy are first class and ability to hold on to the ball, even with a small frame like his, is something that will attract interest from the Premier League.
He is a huge threat in counter attack situations but is also adept in passing his way through the opponent defence. He can play as a false-9 if needed but is more productive on the wing.
The Red Devils are set to lose the likes of Zlatan Ibrahimovic, Wayne Rooney and Juan Mata at the end of the season and need more than one recruits to improve their attack. The likes of Anthony Martial and Marcus Rashford the first choice on the wing for United this season and Mertens should walk into the first team at Old Trafford if he makes the switch.
Having played more than 100 Serie A games and more than 50 international games for Belgium, the 29-year old is one of the most experienced attackers at the moment and Manchester United will not find too many better options than this Belgian star. Do you think United should go all in for him this summer?
