Manchester City has made it through to the top four for another season in the Premier League and has clinched a place in the Champions League for the next term. However, it has been a far from satisfactory performance for Pep Guardiola’s men and they are looking to make amends for a season which has denied them any trophy.
Manchester City has already let go of a number of their players in the last few days including their veteran goalkeeper Willy Caballero which might have come as an aftermath of the disappointing season. However, they have already signed one of the in-form midfielders in Europe in Bernardo Silva, which might be an indication of things to come for the Citizens in the summer.
It goes without saying that Manchester City are in dire need of a good goalkeeper who can be a replacement for the 35-year-old Caballero. Speculations are rife that the Citizens are looking to rope in the young Brazilian shot-stopper Ederson from Benfica following his brilliant performance in the Portuguese Superliga this season. The 23-year-old goalkeeper was one of the major factors for his current side turning into the Portuguese Superliga champions this season.
The Citizens have been sceptical of their main goalkeeper Bravo’s form in the current season, with the Chilean conceding 26 goals, to put his club in a spot of bother. Now that their second choice shot stopper Caballero has left, City look determined to bring in a better shot stopper for the next season, with Ederson completely fitting their bill.
Reportedly, Manchester City have been looking to make a bid for Ederson in the summer to bag him for the next season. The Brazilian shot-stopper has been in brilliant form throughout, putting in some sizzling performances for his side. Sources suggest that he has a £39 million release clause slammed on him by the Portuguese club.
If Benfica let go off their prized possession for £35 million or more to join Manchester City, which is looking to be a strong possibility in the current circumstances, it will be the highest for any goalkeeper in the history of European football, beating the previous record set by Italian giants Juventus when they paid £33 million to Parma for availing the service of the world champion shot-stopper Gianluigi Buffon in 2001.
However, if the deal goes through, 50% of the transfer fees will go to Ederson’s former club Rio Ave, who hold the rights for the Brazilian goalkeeper in the case of a move. Is he an option for Manchester City?
