Barcelona ended the current season with the Copa Del Rey being the only silverware to show for. The Catalan giants had a campaign far from satisfactory in the recently concluded one, both in the Spanish La Liga and Champions League, given the high standards set by them over the years.
One of the biggest problems for the downfall of Barcelona has been their defence. While the central defenders like Gerard Pique and Samuel Umtiti have been at the top of their game for the Catalan side, the players in the right back and left back positions, Sergi Roberto and Jordi Alba had a real tough time to cope with this term.
The backup for Alba in the full back position, Lucas Digne, was unable to make a mark as well, given the fact he was handed very few chances to start.
The Barcelona team management is reportedly looking to hand over a new-look side to their new coach Ernesto Valverde and as a result is determined to offload a few of the last season’s players who have failed to make a lasting impact on the pitch. Speculations are rife that Lucas Digne might be shown the door this summer, and the left back is already in search of a new club for the next season.
This has, as per sources, irked a renewed interest from the Premier League side Liverpool, who are looking desperately to bring in a fullback to add to their squad this summer. The Merseyside club have deployed one of their midfielders, James Milner, to play in the left back position for most of the recently concluded season, with their regular left-back Alberto Moreno being out of favour under Jurgen Klopp.
While Milner has done a commendable job as a makeshift defender in the left back position and has helped his team to make the top four this season, Klopp is well aware of the fact that a regular left back is a dire necessity for his squad in the next season. He is looking to replace Moreno with someone like Digne, who was close to making a move to the English side during the last summer before settling for Barcelona.
Reportedly, the French international has attracted interest from his native club Lyon as well. Liverpool, though, are looking desperate to bag the defender for the next season and might make a bid for the Barcelona ace very soon.
