Stoke City had a very miserable campaign as the Potters finished the season in the 13th place. Mark Hughes’ long-term plan seemed to have backfired as the club remained in the same position where they finished the last season. None would have projected this much of slump as the Potters had placed themselves comfortably inside the top half of the table throughout the season. But a late drop in form forced them to finish the season on a pathetic note.
Despite an erratic season, Mark Hughes managed to grind a number of positives and the form of Bruno Martins Indi is one of them. The Dutch defender was on loan from Porto and was a commanding presence in the Potters defence. Mark Hughes voiced his desire that he was very keen to sign the defender permanently but he needs to convince his parent club who are very reluctant to sell.
After a miserable campaign, the Potters have to find adequate reinforcements to start afresh in the next season. A number of players have performed well below the mark and Hughes is expected to dig deep in the transfer market for new talents.
The gaffer has to sign at least one central defender who could be better than the Dutch international. The 25-year-old had a not so good start at the BET365 stadium but slowly and silently, he got used to the conditions and alongside Ryan Shawcross, he formed an indomitable pairing in the centre of defence for Stoke this season.
A few months ago reports emerged that the English side are very close to agreeing on a permanent deal for the defender and a move looked seemingly possible. But a sudden change of mind from the player has landed Hughes in a sort of a dilemma and despite their reluctance, the club is trying hard to negotiate with the Portuguese outfit for a permanent move.
Back in August, Liverpool was very keen to take the player to Anfield as Jurgen Klopp had his doubts on his defence. Martins Indi can also roll in at left back and his versatility has made him an in-demand commodity.
Eric Pieters has had a decent season and Martins’ inclusion will give him a fierce competition for the left back position. Following a very unsuccessful season, the Potters need to find that lacking balance in the team and the 25-year old could certainly help them with that. Stoke fans will be very eager to hear some good news and Bruno’s signing will surely give them positive vibes before the next season starts.
