Chelsea have been linked with Fenerbahce defender Simon Kjaer. According to some sources, Monaco are also in the race and will make it difficult for Chelsea. Kjaer has established himself in the Turkish League as he seems to be very happy with the current situation. The Danish defender has appeared in 40 matches for the Turkish club and has made himself a regular in the starting lineup with his convincing performances.
Chelsea are yet to make any offer but their interest in the defender is not new. They have been tracking the defender since the winter transfer window but this time they are believed to be pretty serious for him. Arsenal also had made an enquiry about the defender in the summer as injuries to a couple of defenders made them fragile at the back and Arsene Wenger was very adamant to entice a defender to the Emirates.
However, looking at Chelsea’s current defensive performance, the Blues have been one of the most solid defensive sides in the Premier League. Italian managers are known for their tight defensive game plans and that has reflected in Chelsea’s way of playing this term. The three-man defence system was so good that other managers like Mauricio Pochettino and Arsene Wenger followed his steps. However, Chelsea have to match Fenerbahce’s value of €15 m for Kjaer which shouldn’t be a problem for them. John Terry has announced that this will be his last season for the Blues and Conte would like to find a defender who will be on par with the iconic defender.
Liverpool also are in the fray as Jurgen Klopp is in the urgent need of a defender with a commanding presence in the backline. Dejan Lovren and Joel Matip have given a decent performance for the Reds but overall Liverpool defence has been not up to the mark and with European commitment also looming large, Klopp has to find a decent addition for the team.
Kjaer’s ambition could play a role as usually a defender starts to pick up at this age. Monaco reportedly had a primary chat with his representatives and could launch an offer at any moment. The French club is backed by a billionaire Dmitry Rybolovlev who splashed a large amount of money since his acquisition of the club and is actively involved in the club administration.
But Chelsea have to outsmart Monaco’s bid if they really want the service of the player.
