Liverpool are reportedly keeping track of AC Milan’s full-back Mattia De Sciglio as the Reds look to add defensive reinforcements in summer. The 24-year-old defender is highly-rated in Italy with many top clubs vying for his signature, and Liverpool will have to pull off a miracle to sign him. However, given his incredible defensive prowess, he will be worth every penny.
An academy product of AC Milan Sciglio broke into their first team back in 2011 and has been quite a regular for the side since then. However, with the legendary Serie A club losing its vigour recently, it has been difficult to retain their talents in the past few years and Sciglio’s case looks increasingly similar in nature.
De Sciglio is technically supreme as most Italian enforcers are, and what edges him past others in his trade is his vision. At only 24, Sciglio is one of the most intelligent players around. The passes he sees are brilliant and that, blended with his offensive attributes, which help him chip in some of the most brilliant crosses and play impeccable long balls, makes him an incredibly polished product.
At 183cm, he is physically dominant in the air and can also hold the ball pretty well. He has now played 131 games for Milan and lack of quality players at the club has taken a toll on his performance. He has made just 23 appearances this season and as per Calciomercato, a move away from San Siro is definitely on the cards.
His contract with Milan expires in 2018 and any possibility of him extending is looking remote. The Italian will be forced to sell him at the end of the season rather than giving him out for free one year later. The player has reportedly refused to sign a contract extension with the club, which has put the Serie A defending champions and league leaders, Juventus, on high alert.
His price tag is estimated to be at €10 million, which would be easily affordable for any club. With Napoli also queueing up to land him, the defender will have the luxury to choose his club this summer. Bayern Munich are also reportedly willing to land him as they prepare for life after Phillip Lahm.
Liverpool surely have a tight competition on their hands and they will have to ensure a Champions League spot to land him. The Reds are currently walking on a thin margin with Manchester City and United also fighting to secure that spot.
