Bayern Munich stamped their authority once again as they eased past SC Freiburg 4:1 at the Allianz Arena as two legends of the game in the shape of Philip Lahm and Xabi Alonso hung up their boots and waved goodbye to the extraordinary footballing career that they had. An early goal from Arjen Robben set the tone perfectly for a dominant first half. However, a sturdy Freiburg defence wasn’t having any, but at the end, Vidal’s strike gave Bayern a 2:0 advantage. Freiburg were quick to reply through Nils Petersen but failed to carry on the momentum and ended up conceding two late goals from Franck Ribery and Joshua Kimmich.
Here are the best and the worst Bayern players in their final match of the season.
Tom Starke(8/10): Another player who actually played the last game of his career, Starke’s retirement was overshadowed by Lahm and Alonso. He made a number of good saves in the first half and overall, he really enjoyed playing for Bayern in the last few matches of the season.
Philip Lahm(10/10): He will be remembered forever as a Bayern legend. Lahm’s leadership will be missed along with his superiority as a defender. He showed the last glimpse of his talents, as his solid positioning made life difficult for the Freiburg wingers to get through. Also fed Robben on numerous occasions with some great passing.
Jerome Boateng(6.5/10): It has been a tough season for Boateng, who struggled with a lack of first-team opportunities and an early injury against Freiburg added salt into the wounds for the German International.
David Alaba(8/10): Started off a left-sided centre-back, where he did well to fend off any counter attacks from the opposition. Apart from a poor backpass to Starke in the second half, the Austrian International had a fairly quiet afternoon.
Juan Bernat(7.5/10): Often used to getting stick from the Bayern fans, for his error-prone nature of play, Bernat was solid today and did a good job of keeping the flanks in tip-top shape. However, the right flank was way more active compared to the left.
Xabi Alonso(9/10): Even at 34, playing the final match of his career, Alonso showed why he’s been world class through the years. His string pulling in the middle of the pitch set the tempo up perfectly for the Bavarians to execute a high defensive line.
Arturo Vidal(8/10): Vidal was also very solid in possession and duly bossed the midfield against Freiburg. He even tried to go forward at times, and also unleashed some lethal shots from long range. His goal in the second half was important to Bayern’s victory over Christian Streichs men.
Arjen Robben(9.5/10): Was lively throughout the whole ninety minutes, as he teamed up with Lahm to rattle the opposition defence from the right flank. His early goal set the stage perfectly for a long afternoon for Freiburg. The Dutchman continues to keep his amazing form intact even at this ripe old age.
Thomas Muller(8.5/10): Played superbly acting as the main playmaker for Bayern. His passing was sublime and could have had a pair of assist had it not been for an offside call. This will give Muller a lot of confidence going into next season, after disappointing many of the Bayern fans this season.
Kingsley Coman(7.5/10): Didn’t have an impact on proceedings but did show some glimpses of his pace and ability on the left wing.
Robert Lewandowski(6.5/10): An awful afternoon for Lewandowski, where he failed to make use of his chances and ended up falling short. He was chasing his second consecutive Torjagerkanone but Aubameyang’s brace against Bremen meant he failed to outscore the Gabonese International.
