Manchester City have announced that Jesus Navas is now a free agent. The Spaniard was signed by ex-Coach Manuel Pellegrini for a fee of £14.9m from Sevilla in 2013. It’s been four years since his arrival from Spain but Navas has not been able to meet the expectation. People will remember him as a player who had that pedigree in him but would never be able to show that intent on the pitch. Pellegrini was an ardent admirer of him during his time in Spain and brought him back to England to cherish under his guidance.
The pacey winger did show his potential in the earlier months but soon he became the second fiddle to Samir Nasri who was very quick to adjust to the Premier League. Navas’ dip in form was so worse that he never was able to recover from this situation. But recently when Pep deployed him in the right back position he showed glimpses of his Sevilla days. Pep was so impressed that he was ready to offer him an extension but the larger scheme of things has changed his mind. Here are three destinations for the 31-year old:
Sevilla
An obvious choice would be the club he played for a whopping 13 years. A household name in Seville, Navas came through the ranks of the Spanish club and made his name on the European circuit. He would have loved a new deal at the Etihad but the idea of being with his favourite club might be too tempting to turn down. The World Cup winner also has been very homesick like many who come to Manchester and complain about its weather and moving back to Spain might be the best thing for him to regain some form.
AS Roma
The Italian club have performed excellently in Serie A and currently, are finished the season in the second place. Navas has virtually played in all position on the right flank and Roma’s move for him would make a lot of sense. Apart from Mohamed Salah Roma do not have backups in that position and Navas will provide a much-needed stability to the side.
Newcastle United
The newly promoted side could be one of the potential destinations for the Spanish winger, however, there are still no contacts from the club. Benitez has been planning to shake up his squad and Navas will be a worthy addition. Benitez could consider him as his ample experience of Premier League will certainly add flexibility to the squad.
