According to latest reports, Liverpool are hot on the heels of RB Leipzig forward Timo Werner this summer as the Reds look to beef up their attacking prowess following a somewhat successful season in the Premier League this term.
Jurgen Klopp’s side are yet to qualify for the Champions League, which massively hinges upon their result on the last day of the Premier League. Only a win would assure a qualification and the German gaffer now regrets not bringing in enough reinforcements in the summer or even in the winter for that case, to avoid this difficult scenario.
Liverpool have been brilliant in front of the goal this season with the likes of Phillipe Coutinho, Sadio Mane, Roberto Firmino and Daniel Sturridge all performing at the top level. But, they were still nowhere near in challenging for the title with the likes of Chelsea or Tottenham Hotspur, owing to their over-reliance on the few stars.
The Reds’ season got numerous jolts when Coutinho remained sidelined for a month in the first half and Sadio Mane remained unavailable owing to his African Cup of Nations commitment. And now with the Senegalese out for the season after incurring a knee injury, Liverpool have had some disappointing results against Crystal Palace and Southampton. All that have collectively led to this last day drama at Anfield.
However, with reports of the Reds’ intent of getting the young Bundesliga forward indicates that Klopp has learnt from his mistakes. The 21-year-old German international has been prolific this season for Leipzig firing the side to Champions League. He has scored a staggering 21 goals and registered seven assists in 31 league appearances. His heroics have also earned him a national call-up earlier this year.
He has been behind only to Bundesliga stars like Robert Lewandowski, Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang and Anthony Modeste in the race to the Torjägerkanone. His latest show of brilliance was against Bayern Munich in the nine-goal thriller a few weeks back.
An academy product of TSV Steinhaldenfeld, Stuttgart brought him in 2011. His meteoric rise soon followed and five years later Leipzig bought him last summer. He has been pivotal in Leipzig’s dream season this term and pretty much like AS Monaco, RB Leipzig sporting director Ralf Rangnick has also reiterated on many occasions that their star players are not for sale.
With a millionaire owner already at the helm, Leipzig is not short of money or under any pressure to sell their players. And with Leipzig also in the Champions League now, Liverpool hold no edge whatsoever over any of their competitors.
