It seems Mauricio Pochettino has finally got around the fact that big money moves don’t necessarily mean prolific displays. Well, his transfer targets at least indicate that way. According to latest reports, the Lilywhites are targeting Blackpool winger Bright Osayi-Samuel coming summer transfer window.
Tottenham Hotspur are flying high at the moment. Although they crashed out of the FA Cup after a 4-2 loss to Chelsea last weekend, they still have a real chance of winning the title as they trail their London neighbours by just four points in the league table.
Spurs are currently in the second position garnering 71 points from 32 games so far. One of their biggest weapon in Pochettino’s systematic build-up play has been their impeccable flank players. And the Argentine manager’s decision to rely on Newcastle United’s Moussa Sissoko, whom he had brought in for a whopping for €35 million last summer, could have cost them the season. The French international has been a disaster this season and if not for Christian Eriksen and Heung Min-Son, Spurs would have had another traditional mediocre campaign.
Regarded by most managers as one of a complete starting elevens in the league at the moment, Spurs really doesn’t need any such major changes in the starting line-up. It is more about the depth that would matter next season as they enter another hectic season.
Their set-team lacks Plan B and different attacking dimensions, which has really cost them away from home and in the European stage. Samuel would definitely be an interesting addition to their squad given his attacking attributes and could be the next big name in London.
The 19-year-old is naturally a right-winger and can play on the other flank as well, just as Pochettino likes and we won’t be surprised if we see the player ahead of Sissoko in the pecking order. The emergence of the likes of Kane, Alli, Dier, Winks and Son shows just how much Pochettino likes young talents and Samuel looks a promising one.
Samuel has scored five goals and assisted thrice this season for the League Two side, which sits sixth in the table. And with clubs like Arsenal, Everton and Aston Villa also chasing the winger, his reputation in the top-flight football is undeniable.
An academy product of Blackpool, Samuel broke into the first team back in 2015. He has managed 70 appearances for them since scoring five times and assisting the same. The Nigerian international is surely an unproven prospect yet, but with Pochettino as his mentor, he could achieve greater things.
