Everton stood the greatest chance of toppling their foes with Ronald Koeman as they had never defeated Liverpool in the enemy territory in the 21st century. Goals from Sadio Mane, Philippe Coutinho and Origi absolutely destroyed those hopes as a naive defensive performance let them down. Injuries to Morgan Schneiderlin and Coleman heavily weighed down on Everton and after a disappointing day, here’s how the blues have been rated:-
GK: Joel Robles – 4/10
He could just watch the first two goals slide past him and the credit goes to the finishes but he charged badly and conceded the third goal which should have been saved from the goal-line and the finish wasn’t really well placed. Simply a horrible day!
RWB: Mason Holgate – 5/10
He was denied a good goal by Mignolet’s reflexes and Liverpool’s movement, as well as solidness, gave him a rough time.
CB: Matthew Pennington – 5/10
Young shoes stepping in such a heated derby, it was always going to be a gamble. Probably he felt his dream come alive when he scored the equaliser but his naive defence was a big let-down as Liverpool romped past him several times.
CB: Ashley Williams – 5/10
Needs to be more quick but composed and decent today.
CB: Phil Jagielka – 5/10
Competent whenever called upon but collectively it was a defensive failure in the game. He would be massively disappointed to leave the derby again on the losing team.
LWB: Leighton Baines – 6/10
Had to deal with Clyne and battled well but his crosses were in vain as they had no one at the receiving end. He was probably the most comfortable player as a defender for Everton.
CM: Idrissa Gueye – 7/10
A tank filled with energy and he was the only one who was fighting constantly all the game. He’s a priceless player and with a better performance collectively from the team will help him thrive.
CM: Tom Davies – 5/10
Reckless in his challenges and was the first one to be booked. He didn’t look comfortable at all and it was a sad effort.
FW: Ross Barkley – 3/10
Shambolic, reckless and lucky to be on the pitch. His touches were terrible and he never really settled in the game. Poor, very poor from the local lad.
FW: Calvert-Lewin – 4/10
Hardly did anything in the game and was outdone by Matip or Clyne time and again.
ST: Romelu Lukaku – 4/10
He was pocketed by Lovren and wasn’t given a breathing space. Isolated and largely ineffective.
