According to reports today, Mourinho is growing desperate for a centre back and is now back in and in pole position for the signature of Victor Lindelof this summer. He could cost Manchester United a hefty amount this summer and with Benfica ready to let him go, United may finally be able to get their hands on Lindelof this summer. But what will he add to the Old Trafford?
Born in Vasteras, Sweden, the defender spent a season and a half in the Benfica B side before moving into the senior side in 2013. He took a couple of seasons to completely get used to the challenges at the highest level in the country but Lindelof now stands as the first choice centre back for the Portuguese side this season. He has 40 appearances in all competitions for his side this season, including eight in the Champions League and is a player who has already gathered plenty of experience at the highest level. He has also played more than ten games for the Swedish national side and is surely a star in the making.
Peculiarly known for his passing ability from the back, Lindelof is a smart defender who does not like to lose possession easily. He is comfortable playing short passes even under pressure and is a player who reads the game well. His ability to find his teammates in distance allows him to set up his team on attacks but he is more than a solid player at the other end of the field. Concentration being his biggest asset, Lindelof is careful not to be too smart in the penalty box but even at his age, he has a mature head on his shoulders that has seen him hardly commit a mistake so far in his career.
He is strong in the air and will throw himself around when needed and at just 22, he is a player who will come good for years to come. Though Eric Bailly has been decent, Mourinho has not been able to trust Phil Jones or Chris Smalling and might let go of the two this summer. Marcos Rojo has been decent in this role but Lindelof should walk into the first team and partner Bailly at the back, making the United defence that much stronger.
United are also looking at Virgil van Dijk and Jose Gimenez for a move in the summer but the 22-year old Swede, who is getting better by the game, seems to be the best option for United come the end of the season. Do you think Victor Lindelof is the right man for Manchester United this summer?
