Liverpool’s Jurgen Klopp has now joined the likes of Everton and Tottenham Hotspur in the race to sign Bundesliga attacker Max Meyer this summer. The Schalke star broke into the first team for the German club when he was 17 and was impressive in his first couple of seasons in the domestic league. That saw him earn a place in the provisional squad for the national side under Joachim Low but Meyer has found first-team opportunities hard to come by this season and this has seen him linked with an exit come the end of the season. Liverpool are determined to reach his valuation this summer but what will he bring to Anfield?
Currently struggling to find form, Meyer has just two goals and three assists in all competitions for his side this season and has fallen out of favour recently. He had a fall out with Markus Weinzierl, the coach at Schalke and made it even harder for him to break into the first team. However, he still remains one of the most exciting attackers in Europe and Klopp is reportedly determined to land him this summer.
Known for his versatility and ability to play in a variety of roles in an attacking sense, Meyer is at his most productive acting as a partner to the main striker for his side. He is an exceptional number 10 who has all the attributes that makes him difficult to defend. Though not productive in front of goal, Meyer has provided 19 key passes and completed 12 take-on this season, making him one of the most effective in the Bundesliga.
He is a strong player who loves to have the ball at his feet while his dribbling abilities allow him to play a direct brand of football that will attract Jurgen Klopp.
The German tactician has used a 4-3-3 formation with a three-man midfield but he might have to shift his formation to use Meyer in his natural number 10 role. The likes of Adam Lallana, Roberto Firmino, Philippe Coutinho and Sadio Mane are expected to be the first choice next season and Klopp will have to either drop one of the four or change his system, to accommodate the Schalke man in the first team next season.
The 21-year old is an option for the future for Jurgen Klopp who believes that he has the potential to turn into something huge in years to come. He is a superb fit in the fast-paced pressing system at Anfield but Meyer is still relatively weak in aerial duels and needs to improve on his tackling.
But at his age, he has plenty of time to learn the tricks of the game and if Klopp is convinced that he can turn him into the star player, Liverpool should go all in for him this summer. After all, it is not easy to find players with such potential in an inflated market this summer. Do you think Liverpool should move for Max Meyer this summer?
