Like most other Premier League contenders, Liverpool to have grand plans of a squad remodelling before they go into the next season and one of their prime areas of improvement will be the back line. The Reds have faced huge criticism owing to their spineless defending this season and Jurgen Klopp apparently has a list of players prepared which Liverpool would go for in the summer transfer window.
And according to reports, the one player to that pretty much tops that list is FC Schalke midfielder Sead Kolasinac. The 23-year-old is a hot prospect in the summer transfer window among numerous top clubs in Europe and with his current contract ending at the end of the season, there is a high chance his club would sell him.
As per Daily Mail, Liverpool’s direct rival, Arsenal have had advanced talks with Kolasinac’s representatives after they already had initiated talks earlier in January about a possible move. And given Wenger’s affinity towards getting players for cheap, Kolasinac’s free transfer will surely lure him.
Arsenal’s London neighbours, Chelsea, were also interested in his services and had a £5.3 million offer for the Bosnia-Herzegovina international rejected in the winter transfer window. However, when full-backs are concerned, hardly any club is in such crisis as Liverpool. Their much-hyped transfer of Alberto Moreno turned out to be a huge disappoint in the Premier League in his debut season with the manager benching him.
He is likely to make a move at the end of the season. And while Klopp was fortunate to find a potent replacement in the experienced James Milner, it meant leaving the midfield position really thin. Hence, the Reds saw themselves out of ideas when Jordan Henderson was injured. The German manager will definitely not let such a scenario to arise again and getting Kolasinac at such a deal seems the ideal move.
However, Liverpool won’t have it easy as apart from Chelsea and Arsenal, big money sides like Manchester City and Juventus have shown an interest in landing him. A left-back by nature, Kolasinac can play in an advanced role with equal ease, his height of 6ft will further make him an effective asset.
An intelligent reader of the game, the Schalke man is known for his defending foresight and beautifully timed tackles. If Liverpool manages to land Kolasinac, their much-needed cushion in the midfield will return with Milner partnering Henderson just above the back line. This move could actually fill in numerous defensive voids in the Liverpool team.
