Defence
De Gea will undoubtedly be United’s first choice under the bar. The Spaniard has established himself as one of the finest in the Premier League since Alex Ferguson brought him in 2011. His unbelievable reactions and reflexes have earned him some rich suitors across Europe.
United’s left defensive flank doesn’t have a better option other than Luke Shaw at the moment. The English full-back is inarguably the best player in that position in the Premier League, when fit. Although Mourinho hasn’t cut him any slack owing to his slow recovery time, that might even see him leave the side at the end of the season, it doesn’t overshadow his abilities.
The right defensive flank should be taken by Antonio Valencia. His work rate on the right flank, both on the offensive and the defensive is phenomenal. One of the most reliable full-backs in the league, Valencia can produce the most sublime of crosses.
The central defensive pairing should be that of Eric Bailly and Chris Smalling. Jose Mourinho hasn’t had many chances of playing the duo together when they are 100% fit, which was the main plan of the gaffer. With them guarding the defence, we expect United to be rock solid at the back.
Midfield
The central midfield pairing has been the most volatile position for United. Mourinho has tried numerous combinations there but none seem to have the desired effect. Of late, the big money signing, Paul Pogba, is also seen playing in an advanced position. However, we think that the towering Frenchman suits best in the pivot position where he can express his physical and technical self to the best.
Another huge question has been about his ideal partner. Marouane Fellaini has been maddeningly inconsistent this season so far and Ander Herrera’s offensive nature doesn’t make him the most balanced midfielder Mourinho needs. Of the existing lot, Carrick seems to be the ideal fit though his replacement next season, when he leaves, would be worth waiting for.
The number 10 role should be taken by Juan Mata. The Spaniard is immensely gifted and could provide the most sublime of passes from the centre.
Attack
The flanks should be taken by Martial and Henrikh Mkhitaryan. Their pace on the ball and dribbling skills are mesmerising to watch, which blends equally well with their clinical finishing.
Zlatan spearheads the attack. United doesn’t have a better player in that position at the moment.
