It seems Manchester United won’t be leaving any star players whatsoever from being linked with them before the upcoming summer transfer window. After Antoine Griezmann, Harry Kane, James Rodriguez, Neymar, Eric Dier and many more, it is now Mesut Ozil, whose name has been thrown up by the rumour mill, with a possible move to Old Trafford.
The Arsenal playmaker has endured a mixed bag of a campaign this season, which saw the German playmaker hogging the limelight for all the right and wrong reasons. Putting on his scoring boots this season, for a change, the 28-year-old has scored 10 goals in all competition, prompting many to believe that this may finally be his breakthrough season with the North-London club.
But, speculations soon faded away with a series of dismal performances that saw Arsenal getting knocked out of the Champions League and title challenge. It was soon followed by a small patch of underconfident games and an injury. Now, with the aim of the club reduced to getting into the top four and have a go at the FA Cup, Ozil looks to have found his touch again.
As per reports, Ozil has stalled his contract talks with the club that expires at the end of next season, with Arsene Wenger informing that the club will be reopening it after this season. United looks to take advantage of the uncertainty of the situation to make a move.
United, like Arsenal, haven’t had a good Premier League season either with EFL Cup as their only achievement. The star-studded signings have come into question numerous times this season as the Red Devils sit in the fifth position with a real chance of missing out on the Champions League spot. United have pulled off a whopping 12 draws this season, which is equal to 19th placed Middlesbrough in the league table.
Lack of enough chance creation has led to United banging on the opponent’s door without any intent that saw weak teams like Burnley, Everton, Stoke City, Bournemouth, West Bromwich Albion, Hull City and West Ham United completely shutting Mourinho’s attack time and again.
United are in desperate need of someone who could unlock the stiffest of back lines with his clever passes, which Ozil is capable of. The German international has had 11 assists this season, which saw Arsenal overcoming tricky opponents like West Brom and Burnley. However, Ozil’s less than cordial relationship with United manager, from during their stints at Real Madrid, could prove to be a significant factor in Ozil’s refusal to join them.
