With the departure of Club Captain and legendary defender John Terry just around the corner, it has become the biggest priority for Chelsea to sign a world class centre back, who can at least take a shot at filling up the boots that the former England captain is leaving behind.
A few names have already made it to the top of the list for Chelsea coach Antonio Conte. Out of these, Juventus defender Leonardo Bonucci and Sporting Gijon defender Jorge Mere are the ones that are mostly being talked about. Sources claim that Chelsea have already sent scouts to Spain to get hold of Mere, with Manchester City leading the race to bag Leonardo Bonucci.
As per sources, Chelsea will have to dish out an estimated £25 million to rope in Jorge Mere. There are also speculations that after the buying of the 19-year-old defender, Chelsea will hand him out on loan to get some more time on the pitch.
Jorge Mere is being considered as the next exciting prospect in world football. He has already made more than 50 appearances in the Spanish league. His current contract with Sporting Gijon expires in the year 2020.
Jorge Mere has been popular for his own style of football, which sees him dribble through the opposite team’s defence, a trait seldom seen in central defenders. He concentrates on keeping possession of the ball at all times and blocks out the opponents forwards from getting to it.
However, the Spaniard has been criticised at times for his weakness to win aerial duels. Mere likes to play short passes, which is also unlikely for a defender, whose main motto remains “kick-run-fight”.
Chelsea, on the other hand, has been in the best of form in the Premier League. The Blues from London are currently on the top of the table, maintaining a difference of 7 points with second-placed Tottenham Hotspur. However, the recent loss at the Selhurst Park has irked the immediate necessity to find a robust centre-back, who can hold the fort firmly for Chelsea.
With the departure of John Terry almost certain after the end of this season, football pundits opine that Chelsea might find a very good replacement for the English International in the youngster Jorge Mere. Rumours are that blues boss Antonio Conte is taking a special interest in bringing the Spaniard to Stamford Bridge with immediate effect.
With the speculations running high and free, it is now a “wait and watch” scenario for the Chelsea fans to find out whether Conte can be successful in bringing in the 19-year-old centre-back from Spain to London.
