Liverpool will look to take their unbeaten streak to nine matches as they host a revived Crystal Palace side this Sunday. The Reds have a two-point lead over Manchester City at the moment playing one game more (33), and they will have a fabulous chance of capitalising on that this week as City plays Arsenal in the FA Cup semis.
Liverpool are on a rare good run right at the end of the season this time, which has often seen them falter and lose points on numerous previous occasions. The Reds hardly have any difficult fixture to worry about and if they keep up the momentum, a Champions League spot is confirmed.
Their next opponents, however, share a good record at Anfield. The Eagles have won their last two away fixtures against Liverpool and could complete a hat-trick if they manage a win this time too. The last time this happened was back in October 2005 with Chelsea.
While it could be worrisome for the Reds, it is also a fact that Palace manager Sam Allardyce has never won a game at Anfield as a manager.
Predicted Liverpool Xi vs Crystal Palace
Defence
Simon Mignolet is expected start under the bar. The Belgian looked quite composed between the sticks against West Bromwich Albion last game, who could pose a real threat from set-pieces. The Belgian’s ball collection and distribution were applauded by many.
The defensive flanks will be taken by James Milner and Nathaniel Clyne. The duo has been one of the better defenders for Liverpool and will have a big role to play against the likes of Wilfred Zaha and Andros Townsend. The Palace wingers have been in top form of late and both Clyne and Milner will have a busy time keeping them quiet.
The central defence will be taken by Dejan Lovren and Joel Matip. The injury of Ragnar Klavan has tightened the options for Klopp at the back and young Joe Gomez will be on the bench in case the need arises.
Midfield
Central midfield has been a huge concern for Klopp since the injury of Jordan Henderson. While Emre Can has had his shaky displays in between, Klopp now seems settled with the experienced Lucas Leiva there.
With the 30-year-old holding the midfield well, the likes of Georginio Wijnaldum and Can will be responsible for maintaining the flair of the game.
Attack
The flanks will be taken by Phillipe Coutinho and Roberto Firmino. The Brazilian grabbed the all-important winner at Hawthorns and in the absence of Sadio Mane, his role will be crucial. Divock Origi will spearhead the attack.
