Zinedine Zidane’s Real Madrid are in a decent position to lift the La Liga title this season but the manager is aware of the few shortcomings in the squad that need to be addressed this summer. The goalkeepers’ position is one he is sure to target at the end of the season.
Keylor Navas, the current first choice at the Bernabeu has not been at his best this season and has cost Real a few points and Zidane is convinced that he needs to be replaced this summer. He is looking at the likes of David de Gea, Hugo Lloris and Thibaut Courtois over a move to the Spanish capital this summer but one player who is now linked with a move to the club is Italian sensation Gianluigi Donnarumma.
Arguably the most exciting teenager on display in Europe, Donnarumma is right up there with one of the most consistent shot-stoppers in the sport. He is out of a contract at the end of the season and his current club AC Milan are desperate to get him to sign a bumper deal. However, the 18-year old is yet to put pen to paper and Real Madrid are one of the few clubs that are showing interest in his signature.
Financially, Real Madrid might be able to beat all other clubs in Europe in signing the Italian star but is he a good option for the Bernabeu outfit? Having started his youth career at Napoli, Donnarumma moved to Milan back in 2015 and has ever since been their first choice. He already has 63 appearances in Serie A, all at the age of 18, and is a star in the making.
He has also made three first team appearances for the Italian national side, replacing Gianluigi Buffon in goal and is fast growing into a household name. At his age, Donnarumma has already achieved more than what many people can even dream of and a move to Real Madrid will only make his career all the more sparkling.
Usually, a move to a club of Real’s stature would mean that the youngster will struggle for first team opportunities. But Donnarumma has a chance to walk into the playing XI next season and it is an opportunity he will have to think twice about before he can reject it.
Zidane has some seriously dependable options on his wish list but Donnarumma represents a long-term investment and could solve the problems in front of the sticks for more than a decade. Even at 18, Donnarumma has shown great confidence in his job and Zidane will not be too concerned about his age and lack of experience in trying to get him to the Bernabeu.
