Borussia Dortmund showed impressive fighting effort to come back from 2:1 down to win the game 3:2. Marco Reus found the opener early on as he successfully converted the spot kick within three minutes.
Mikel Merino then gifted Gladbach with a goal as his undercooked pass was intercepted and finished off by captain Lars Stindl. Gladbach even went 2:1 up shortly after the restart through Marcel Schmelzer’s own goal.
However, Dortmund wasn’t to be knocked down so easily. Pierre-Emerick Aubemeyang restored parity just a few minutes after coming on while Raphael Guerreiro completed the comeback just three minutes before time to hand Dortmund a valuable three points.
Here are the player ratings in their impressive comeback versus the Foals.
Roman Burki(8.5/10): Saved Dortmund’s blushes more than once to keep his side still in the equation otherwise Gladbach’s offensive firepower could have wrapped up the game much earlier. Couldn’t have done much for the two goals he conceded.
Erik Durm(7.5/10): Struggled to make his mark on the opposition flanks but did well to mark the wingers in the first place. However, Durm lacked a lot of punch in the final end product.
Sven Bender(7.5/10): Was fairly decent in the defensive line of Dortmund. Bender’s good positioning helped him keep tabs on the opposition throughout the game.
Matthias Ginter(6.5/10): His poor form this season continues. Ginter was extremely terrible with his positioning and marking as he could have done better in both of the Gladbach goals. His poor performances leave Dortmund with a lot to ponder especially with the all important clash against Bayern just around the corner.
Marcel Schmelzer(6.5/10): It was an absolute horror show from Marcel Schmelzer on the left flank. The 29-year-old had a lacklustre evening in defence and also lacked the quality to make himself heard on the offensive lines.
Nuri Sahin(NA): Was incredibly unfortunate as Tobias Sippel stood right up on his ankle and so he had to be replaced early on within the 15 minutes. The Turkish International was just coming back from a long injury absence and seeing him out for another long-term injury will be devastating for the Dortmund fans.
Gonzalo Castro(7/10): Struggled without the services of Julian Weigl as always. The former Leverkusen man wasn’t able to keep the midfield structure intact. Needs to perform much better if he is to solidify his position in the starting lineup.
Ousmane Dembele(8/10): A mixed performance from the French winger. He was unplayable at times but also extremely irritating on few occasions. His great ball through paved the way for Aubameyang to score the equaliser in the second half.
Raphael Guerreiro(8.5/10): Was a genius in the middle. The Portuguese international showed his true colours and created a host of opportunities before turning it on himself in the final minutes to rescue two valuable points for his side.
Christian Pulisic(8.5/10): Caused a lot of trouble for the Gladbach defenders on the left flank. The American used his agility and skill to constantly keep the defence busy. He also won his side a penalty within the first ten minutes but was unlucky not to find himself on the scoresheet.
Marco Reus(8.5/10): Led the line well and showed incredible footballing IQ to constantly keep the pressure on the opposition. Calmly converted the penalty early on which set the tone perfectly for the visitors.
Subs
Mikel Merino(6.5/10): The young man failed to make use of his opportunity as he gifted a goal to the opposition after coming on for Nuri Sahin. Had a few nervy moments and was lacking confidence as well.
Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang(8.5/10): Took no time making his mark on the game. The Gabonese marksman scored his 27th goal of the season just after coming on just around the hour mark. He now moved one goal ahead of Robert Lewandowski as the leading scorer in the Bundesliga.
