There was a time at Arsenal when there used to be a clear lack of quality between the sticks. During the financial stringency which the club had to endure owing to the debts which were piled after the construction of the Emirates Stadium, the goalkeeping slot suffered terribly and Arsene Wenger had to dish out youngsters to cater to his needs.
The entire scenario has changed completely and the problem of choosing the best has erupted onto the scene now. Wojciech Szczesny is one of the most passionate players to have adorned the grand and historically profound Arsenal shirt.
However, despite being outstandingly outrageous in making saves on innumerable occasions, the 26-year-old did suffer from a sporadic form and an overconfident attitude and eventually, he was shipped to AS Roma in the summer of 2015.
The Polish is undergoing his second season in Serie A and is enjoying a fruitful period there. In a total of 30 appearances in the Italian top flight so far this season, Szczesny has piled 13 clean sheets and is likely for a return to North London at the end of the season.
On the other hand, the renowned man with the gloves, Peter Cech’s availability coupled with the recent emergence of a young goalie in the shape of Emilio Martinez has particularly cast dark clouds over the future of David Ospina at the club.
When Ospina was signed by Monsieur Wenger in 2014, he was believed to be the one who would be stationed on the pitch with the gloves week in and week out. However, it didn’t pan out in that manner and the Columbian international has had to be content being the deputy to Cech.
FA Cup and Champions League fixtures appearances might get him the limelight, but it is a hard truth that he is used as a second fiddle and let’s underline the perception that plying trade in the league on a consistent basis has a charm of its own.
Recently, Ospina had been pretty vocal of his willingness to join Fenerbahce if the Gunners are okay with offloading him. He believes that the Turkish Lig would be a fresh start to his career which has really not blossomed ever since his move to Arsenal.
He wants more game time under his belt and that might not be a realistic personal target for him with his current club. Frankly speaking, the former Nice goalkeeper still has the requisite calibre to play every week and this move should benefit all the parties involved.
