Sunderland are a club in a complete mess and disarray. Placed rock bottom in the Premier League table, David Moyes has hardly been of any help as relegation at the end of the ongoing campaign appears to be almost certain owing to the fact that they are 7 points adrift of the safe zone.
In a season which has hardly been theirs, Jermain Defoe has continued his fine goal scoring nick in the top tier of English football. The 34-year-old hitman has banged 14 goals and registered 2 assists to his name, apart from clocking 0.5 key passes every game on an average from 28 appearances and has been the only silver lining in Sunderland’s troublesome season so far.
With a demotion on the cards for his current employers, the English poacher has admitted that he could look for an exit from the Stadium of Light once the curtains of the summer transfer window get lifted. So, Newcastle United should really pounce upon the opportunity and acquire the first-mover’s advantage by luring the sensational goal-getter to St. James’ Park if the scenario continues to persist in the same manner.
We aren’t unfamiliar to the fact that the Geordies have really suffered every time their preferred striker, Dwight Gayle, has been sidelined owing to injuries. Daryl Murphy hasn’t really taken the Championship by storm and the sporadic form of Aleksandar Mitrovic has done them more damage than good.
An immediate return to the top-flight might actually materialise for Newcastle United owing to their strong position in the second tier, but then, they would need to boost their attacking arsenal if they want to set up shop again in the Premier League.
Defoe is a clinical poacher up front whose knack of banging goals left right and centre is simply unparalleled. Having plied his trade for English clubs such as West Ham United, Bournemouth, Portsmouth and Tottenham Hotspur, he has gained immense experience and has been successful almost everywhere.
The Toons shouldn’t hesitate in launching a bid to lure Defoe under the ranks of Benitez. Although his contract with Sunderland expires in the summer of 2019, a decent temptation alongside the player’s own reluctance to play for the Black Cats should put the ball in the court of the black and white crops. Should they successfully lay their hands on Defoe, it would be a huge statement of intent from the former Real Madrid manager.
