A resounding backline has been the cornerstone of Celtic’s success story so far this term as the defensive setup of Brendan Rodgers has been resilient, consistent and thoroughly reliable. While the central defenders have found a strong footing, the full-backs have left no stone unturned to maintain a stupendous balance between their attacking and defensive endeavours.
One of the players who has earned a widespread recognition has been their high-calibre left-back in the form of Kieran Tierney. The 19-year-old young gun has been in a rampaging mood throughout the campaign and has made the Bhoys’ long-standing servant, Emilio Izaguirre, a deputy on the aforesaid slot. The way he has blossomed is simply unparalleled and has already started to draw a lot of attention from the European powerhouses.
Agonisingly, the Scottish giants do not possess the financial muscle and are likely to give in to the temptations which they are likely to receive once the summer transfer window opens. In a scenario like this which is anticipated to pan out at the end of the season, Rodgers should start looking at replacements for the starlet and one of the players he must consider is Hull City’s, Andrew Robertson.
Robertson has played 24 times in the Premier League so far this campaign and has bagged 1 assist. Going into his defensive aspects, he has registered 1.7 tackles, 1.7 interceptions, 2.3 clearances, 0.6 dribbles and 0.5 blocks, which are some decent statistics for a full-back of a trouble-prone outfit. The Tigers are placed 18th in the league with 24 points from 29 games and are likely to relegated, and this should be an excellent opportunity for the Celts to lure him to the Celtic Park.
Robertson should fit the bill perfectly, for he is a modern-day full-back who is versatile enough to operate from the left side of the midfield as well. Although his offensive aspects are a bit inferior to someone like Tierney, he balances it out with his noteworthy defensive contributions. He has the requisite equipment in his arsenal to ply his trade for any top-flight clubs across Europe and has garnered enough experience whilst operating for Queen’s Park, Dundee United and Hull City.
Intriguingly, he came up through the ranks of the Hoops but never got the chance to play for their senior side and of course, he would believe that he has an unfinished business with the green and white crops. Should Celtic attempt to sign Robertson, it would make perfect sense, for they would be laying their hands on a 23-year-old who can only get better from here in the upcoming seasons.
