Mark Warburton’s termination following an awkward scenario at the Ibrox Stadium meant that Rangers are to content themselves with Graeme Murty as their interim manager unless the board lays its hands over a permanent gaffer. The Gers have had a torrid campaign in the Scottish Premiership after their promotion back to the top tier, and have been nowhere near the flamboyance which their arch rivals, Celtic, have plied their trade with. With merely 46 points from 27 league games, the Teddy Bears are placed third on the league table and are 33 points behind Brendan Rodgers’ men who are sitting comfortably at the summit.
There has indeed been a lot of speculations of late and one of the latest names to have surfaced with respect to the managerial post available at the Glasgow-based outfit is that of Pedro Caixinha. The Portuguese, who is currently the manager of Qatar Stars League side Al-Gharafa, is even willing to pay £300,000 from his own pocket to become the next manager of Rangers owing to his keenness to lead them back to the glory days. But, will he not be an unwarranted risk to be taken from a club which is going through a really tough and transient phase?
With due respect to Caixinha, he might have the experience as a manager as well as an assistant manager in various parts of the world but the Scottish Premiership is a completely different territory and certainly an unfamiliar one to him.
The void boots left by Warburton would be too big for the 46-year-old and one might ponder as to whether he would be able to sustain the pressure that is seemingly likely to be mounted over the next Gers’ manager. To re-establish themselves as a formidable side, they need a proven face and Caixinha doesn’t really fit the bill.
Moreover, to get the backing of their fans, Rangers are undoubtedly in a dire need to rope in someone who could excite the faithful, who has won plenty of accolades, who could make shrewd tactical ramifications during a game and whose name could help catch the affordable household names of the game. At the onset, Caixinha to Rangers doesn’t smell good and could prove to be a disaster for them. More than anything else, an element of consistency is required and any crazy move at this point could really hinder their prospects of going forward.
