Middlesbrough will be ready for a stern test when they take on Manchester City in the FA Cup quarter-final on Saturday. Back to back losses at the hand of Crystal Palace and Stoke City have deepened their crisis and they have been submerged into the relegation zone. Boro are currently in the 18th place in the Premier League. However, they have a chance to redeem their season when they will host Manchester City.
Aitor Karanka’s side defeated Oxford United 3-2 in the FA Cup fifth round to move into the quarters. Cristhian Stuani, Rudy Gestede and Grant Leadbitter were on target as Boro got past the challenge of Oxford. Boro are currently on a 10-game winless run in the Premier League but that doesn’t seem to affect their FA Cup form.
Karanka has a tough task on his hands as Daniel Ayala is doubtful against the Citizens. The 26-year-old had to be substituted in the defeat against Stoke City as he injured his hamstring and might not feature in this crucial quarter-final. The gaffer is likely to field a strong line up as a win against the mighty City might just set the tone for the remainder of the season.
Predicted 4-3-3 Middlesbrough Lineup To Ease The Pressure On Aitor Karanka
Defence
Victor Valdes is a certain starter in the Boro goal. The former Barcelona keeper has been instrumental to Boro’s defensive form this season.
With Ayala unsure for the match, Karanka could try a new pairing in central defence. Antonio Barragan can play as a centre-back and can partner Ben Gibson in the Boro defence. Fabio is set to start in the right back position while George Friend should start on the left-hand side.
Midfield
Adam Clayton will be the deepest lying player in the midfield three. He will have the task to break up City’s attack consisting of the likes of Leroy Sane and David Silva. Stewart Downing and Grant Leadbitter will be the two central midfielders.
Attack
Viktor Fischer and Adama Traore will be on the two wings to provide the much-needed width to the team. Traore has been pretty impressive but has failed to do justice to his potential. The 21-year-old is yet to open his account for the Riversiders. Karanka will opt for a single striker and Rudy Gestede will have the responsibility to lead the Boro attack.
