At one point of time in the Championship this season, it appeared as if Norwich City were a genuine contender to earn a promotion back to the Premier League after having been demoted last season. But after having collected merely 3 points from their last five outings, their dreams are slowly but surely drifting away into the clutches of nothingness. To worsen their case (well, that’s debatable!), the Canaries have sacked Alex Neil from the managerial post and are 8 points away from the nearest playoff spot held by Sheffield Wednesday.
Big money moves are no longer a rarity in Championship and the evidence of the same could be derived from the latest coups by Aston Villa, Sheffield Wednesday and Wolverhampton Wanderers as they acquired the services of Jonathan Kodija, Jordan Rhodes and Helder Costa. However, the latest reports of Norwich City taking marauding strides and going as far as to lure Porto’s striker Vincent Aboubakar is certainly to be categorised on another level.
On loan to Turkish Super Lig club Besiktas, Aboubakar has mustered 6 goals in 14 games apart from creating 14 chances and registering 1 assist in what is turning out to be a productive season for him.
The 25-year-old hitman has plied his trade in the Champions League in his last three seasons and not to mention the notable experience he has picked up whilst playing for Cameroon and is unarguably a fearsome candidate up front. The Canaries need to create a formidable core to ensure that their aspiration to get back into the Premier League isn’t totally outlandish and Aboubakar fits the bill impeccably.
The former Lorient striker is physically very strong, has raw pace to terrorise defenders, has the technical edge to be a leading striker for any quality side and is effective in shooting from a handsome distance as well. He also combines well with the rest of the attackers and his movement throws defenders off guard.
Aboubakar has the experience that is needed and more than anything else, he could be the impetus that the club sorely need this summer. Norwich City need a free-flowing and consistent goal-getter and who could find the back of the net 15-20 times in the league and creates constant pressure on the opponents. Yes, the transfer fee might force the English second tier outfit to break the bank but frankly speaking, he is worth pursuing.
