Newcastle United are undergoing a spectacular season in the Sky Bet Championship after getting demoted from the Premier League last term. Under the tutelage of Rafael Benitez, the Geordies have been making statements of their intent from the very inception and are well on course to earn a ticket back to the promised land of Premier League.
An immediate promotion was, however, expected from them but again, they still have tweaks to amend before they appear stable enough to face the animosity which the top flight has on offer. One of the key areas of concern has been their striking department which has seemed, on many occasions, to be bereft of flamboyance and confidence, particularly in the absence of Dwight Gayle.
The former Crystal Palace striker has been suffering from a hamstring injury of late which has left a lot to be desired up front. Daryl Murphy and Aleksander Mitrovic haven’t put the ground ablaze and thus, signing a poacher with predating instincts who could shoulder the responsibilities up front would hold paramount importance in the summer.
Apparently, Newcastle United have been reported to be interested in luring Bournemouth hitman, Callum Wilson, to St. James’ Park next season to meet their thirst of a formidable and consistent goal-getter. The 25-year-old centre-forward has banged 6 goals in 20 appearances for the Cherries this season and let’s not forget that he scored on 5 occasions in 13 games last season as well.
Strong physical structure, a keen eye for goals and creator of many chances for his teammates, Wilson is a complete package in the final third. He holds the ball well, outmuscles the defenders and never refrains from shooting from a handsome distance as well. The former Coventry City player was once of the prime reasons of the Cherries’ promotion a couple of seasons back as his 20 goals and 7 assists in the Championship proved to be one of the impetus for his side’s uplift.
However, Wilson is someone who would knock on the team’s medical room’s door too often and has been ruled out for the rest of the season owing to his cruciate ligament injury which he suffered in the training session last month. He is due to miss more than a couple of months next season, and that forces the Toons to reconsider their aspirations. Nonetheless, he is someone who could really sharpen up Benitez’s offensive setup and cultivate a healthy competition for the starting spot.
