Manchester United’s Premier League season has been all the more frustrating primarily because of the unexpected draws that the Red Devils have encountered against the mid-table and lower league sides.
Being one of the toughest and most hectic leagues in the world, few clubs have found it easy to dominate throughout the whole campaign. Slim and close wins are very common in England as we have often seen league leaders Chelsea doing this season. United have failed to imitate that big time this year, and one of the main reasons for that has been their inconsistent back line.
Apart from the light years that manager Jose Mourinho took to experiment and get a set first-team, repeated injuries to centre-halves Eric Bailly, Phil Jones and Chris Smalling have only made things more difficult for the manager. And now finally with the squad, all fit and ready, Europa League fixtures could be a major hindrance in ending their Premier League decently.
With the summer transfer window approaching fast, the 54-year-old will have to make sure such a blunder doesn’t repeat itself. According to reports, Manchester United are eyeing a summer bid for Fenerbahce centre-half Simon Kjaer. The Danish international has been on fire of late, attracting many European giants that include the likes of Chelsea and Marseille.
The 28-year-old has played 19 times for the Turkish giants this season and seems to be the only bright aspect of their disappointing season. Kjaer has managed three goals and one assist in all competitions for Fenerbahce. He has been a fan favourite at the club since joining from Ligue 1 side Lille back in 2015.
A centre-half by nature, Kjaer can also play as a defensive midfielder. And given the number of centre-backs United have in the squad, Kjaer’s versatility could be a huge asset for Mourinho. At 189cm, he could be really dominant in aerial duels and solid defensively. His brilliant right foot also makes him quite lethal from direct free-kicks.
As per reports, newly born millionaires of Ligue 1, Marseille, are the front runners to get his signature next summer and could win the race against United and Chelsea. Marseille manager Rudi Garcia shares a cordial relationship with Kjaer since their days at AS Roma and might be an influential factor in landing the player.
Fenerbahce aren’t having the best of seasons so far as they are in fear of missing put on the Champions League qualification spot. The former Super Lig champions are also being observed by UEFA concerning to Financial Fair play.
