A detailed scrutiny of the Premier League might suffice to decipher that Everton are a sensational club in the making. When Roberto Martinez was in charge, much of the galvanising anecdotes were scripted off the pitch and very little actually mattered (on the pitch that is) and the Toffees momentarily fell into the clutches of mediocrity. But ever since Ronald Koeman was handed the command of the ship, there has been positive vibes floating tirelessly across the Goodison Park.
The apparent big six of the Premier League (which need not be mentioned) might catch our eye if we look at the league charts but slowly yet surely, Koeman has steered his employers up the ladder and at the moment, they are very much in contention of bagging the Europa League spot. Everton are placed seventh on the league table and are merely three points adrift of the fifth place as the league enters its concluding stages.
Irrespective of where they finish, the former Southampton manager is well aware that the expectations from him and his troops would be sky-high and thus, he needs to target household names in the English game who are not going to take too much of time to get acclimatised to the hostility of the Premier League and Swansea City’s winger, Gylfi Sigurdsson, appears to be on the wish-list of the Dutchman for the summer transfer window.
The 27-year-old is enjoying a fruitful season under the tutelage of Paul Clement, having scored 8 goals in 28 appearances so far this term in the league, apart from bagging as many as 11 assists and creating 57 chances and considering the sharp attacking option that he provides, Everton’s interest is thoroughly justifiable.
Sigurdsson is unarguably one of the best attacking players available in the Premier League. The fact that he is so underrated makes him an even more canny choice. The talismanic midfielder who has truckloads of experience is an impact player who would dish out something spectacular time and again to pull his side out of misery. Strong, productive, and creative, the Iceland international orchestrates the side as a unit and his tremendous work ethic makes him a perfect player to have for a top quality side.
He can very well be the cog in the Toffees’ midfield (if the deal materialises) and if Everton splashes the requisite cash to tempt the Swans, it could prove to be a shrewd move.
