Rangers have gone through a lot in recent years and their move back to the top tier hasn’t gone to plan totally. The arrival of their new manager in the form of Pedro Caixinha might not lead to the blossoming of immediate results in terms of silverware in the ongoing campaign but the Portuguese can really reclassify his troops as a solid outfit by making some shrewd deals in the summer transfer window.
Caixinha might have publically stated that the Gers have the best squad in the Ladbrokes Premiership but that was unarguably a pretty exaggerated perception as in terms of quality, Celtic are a complete side which is resourceful on every frontier. The former Al-Gharafa manager, somewhere down the line, would want to set up a core team and one of the players he can really pounce upon is Heart of Midlothian’s winger, Sam Nicholson.
Nicholson was linked to a move to the Ibrox Stadium when the command of their ship rested with Mark Warburton. The deal failed to cross the line but considering that the 22-year-old is still adamant not to extend his contract with Hearts, which expires in the summer, and wants to continue his career elsewhere, Caixinha will be able to get him without the involvement of any transfer fee. A cheap investment which seems likely to turn into a sensational one, Nicholson should fit Rangers’ bill perfectly.
Predominantly a left winger, Nicholson can be equally effective on the right wing as well as in the right midfield slot, implying that he is a perfect utility player. In 15 Premiership games so far this campaign, he has already bagged 3 goals and 4 assists to his name which means that his move from Edinburg to Glasgow would make a lot of sense and will hand the Teddy Bears an opportunity to lay their hands on a valued asset in Scottish football.
Nicholson boasts of thrilling pace down the flanks and is a modern-day winger who loves to outrun the opposition defenders and loves to cut inside and take shots on goal. He is supremely talented and despite his tender age, he has already clocked more than a century of appearances for Hearts and acclimatising himself with a new outfit but similar circumstances shouldn’t really be an issue.
What has been intriguing to see is that the youngster has been pretty consistent this season and has fought his demons of not being able to make full utilisation of his calibre. Kenny Miller’s contract expires in the summer and Martyn Waghorn has been sporadic in form and no wonder such a stunning deal to get hold of Nicholson would hold paramount importance in the summer.
