Arsene Wenger is yet to decide on his future as his contract runs its course at the end of the season. Though he has not been successful in the last couple of seasons, he is expected to stay at the club for at least another year and is already looking at potential additions to the squad. A number of star players have been linked with a move to the Emirates recently and one such player who could make the move this summer is Leicester City star, Kasper Schmeichel.
Helping the Foxes to a historic title victory in the previous season, Schmeichel Jr, the son of legendary goalkeeper Peter Schmeichel, has been their best player this season.
But do Arsenal need him?
Currently, Wenger has used Petr Cech as the first choice between the sticks in the domestic league. The Czech Republic international is still among the best in the business and was one of the best players for the Gunners in the previous season, putting in a number of match-winning performances for his side.
However, with age catching up, Cech has just not been consistent this season and has failed to provide the kind of cover that Arsenal have needed in front of goal. He will turn 35 at the end of the season and it is hard to see Arsenal stick with him for another season.
Colombian international David Ospina has been playing second fiddle to Cech in the last couple of seasons but barring miraculous performances once a year, he is not first choice material for the Gunners at the moment. At 28, he can still find consistency in his game but will need regular playing time to help himself improve. But Wenger and Arsenal are not going to use him in the first team next season, which might see him look to quit the club in search of playing time.
Wojciech Szczesny, the 26-year old Polish international is also on the books of Arsenal but he has been on loan at AS Roma since the start of the previous season making 62 Serie A appearances and cementing a place in the first team. The Italian outfit are determined that he is a decent option for the future and the player’s comments that he ‘”learned more in four months under Spalletti than in 10 years in England” says that he has little future at the Emirates.
This could leave the Gunners with just Emiliano Martinez and Ryan Huddart, making the Danish international from the King Power a must sign for Arsene Wenger. With four clean sheets and 74 saves this season in the Premier League, Schmeichel is right up there with the best in the league in his position and though Cech has better numbers, Schmeichel, 30, is a player who can hold this position at the Emirates for years to come.
Wenger needs a complete overhaul this summer and surely it could start with the goalkeeping position. Cech may well stay at the club and act as a cup keeper while Schmeichel can walk into the first team next season. Though not the greatest passer around, Schmeichel has decent technique and is an experienced option but do you think Kasper Schmeichel is the right option for Arsenal this summer?
