Without a shade of doubt, White Hart Lane has the best set of attacking midfielders in the Premier League at the moment. Tottenham Hotspur’s duo of Christian Eriksen and Dele Alli has been in hot form this season with 20 goals and 14 assists between them and they are one of the main reasons the Lilywhites have leapfrogged the likes of Arsenal, Manchester City, Manchester United and Liverpool in the league table.
However, one cannot deny the fact that Mauricio Pochettino has been extremely fortunate to have both of them fit and in top form for the most part of the season. And one can only imagine how this season would have panned out if Spurs would have to play in their absence; like Liverpool have done without Phillipe Coutinho and Adam Lallana or Arsenal without Santi Cazorla and Aaron Ramsey, or Manchester City without Ilkay Gundogan.
It is not hidden that Spurs have no one on their bench who can potentially replace them and Pochettino had no choice but to overplay them on many occasions, most notably in the Champions League and Europa League that didn’t end well for the North-London club. While other options like Moussa Dembele and Heung-Min Son have done their part whenever deployed there, they are not natural in that position and it was felt.
The manager doesn’t want to repeat the same mistake next season and according to reports, Tottenham are plotting a move for Bundesliga’s young sensation Nadiem Amiri. The Hoffenheim midfielder has grabbed many eyeballs with his dazzling displays up the field and could leave the club at the end of the season.
Given his young age, the 20-year-old has shown good maturity with his intelligent passing and picking players from long range. He is already being considered one of the best young midfielders in that position and if German news outlet Bild is to be believed, then La Liga giants Atletico Madrid are ready to give stiff competition to Tottenham in landing him this summer.
An academy product of German side SV Waldhof Mannheim U-17, Hoffenheim realised his potential quite early in 2012, and he came up fast through their ranks before breaking into the first team in 2014. He has been quite eye-catching since then.
Amiri has netted two goals and assisted four times this season so far. He debuted in Germany’s U-21 side last year and has been capped seven times since then. However, his contract talks haven’t been very smooth despite him entering the last 18 months with the club.
His club has already rejected a £11m from RB Leipzig last summer, but they cannot retain him for long. Tottenham would really like to capitalise on the situation, however, it would boil down to the player’s choice in the end.
