Barcelona might just end up having a successful season this time too, as the Catalans have bounced back in the Champions League and also have a shot at the La Liga title, though the latest setback against Deportivo might have derailed that a bit. But still, it is a commendable position to be in, especially as they started their campaign in the most nightmarish way possible. And one of the huge reasons contributing towards that has been an underwhelming summer shopping by manager Luis Enrique.
Barcelona have quite noticeably failed to replace their title winner Dani Alves on the right defensive flank, which has been a constant thorn in their path throughout this season. And the Catalans will make it absolutely sure that such a blunder doesn’t repeat itself ever again. Hence, with news emerging of another of their veteran leaving Nou Camp soon, we expect the club to call upon search parties for immediate reinforcements.
Reportedly, former Liverpool midfielder Javier Mascherano, who has developed into a complete centre-half at Barcelona would want to end his career at boyhood club River Plate, where he can begin his coaching career suitably. The 32-year-old Argentine international has won two Champions League and four La Liga titles with Barca, since moving from Anfield in 2010.
Mascherano’s brother, Sebastian, has stated, “I would say that he is going to retire at River… It is a club that gave him a lot. Everything that he achieved he achieved because of River because it was a big window. Javier is going to want to return to River to start his career as a coach.”
We list three players who Barcelona could opt to sign as Mascherano’s perfect replacement-
Leonardo Bonucci- The Juventus star is close to leaving the Italian giants with the club looking to bank heavily on their young products Caldara and Rugani for the future. Many European heavyweights like Chelsea, Manchester United and Real Madrid are keeping close eyes on this development and Barcelona’s interest could definitely tempt the Italian. Given that he is only 29 now, he could be an experienced and potent long-term replacement for the Argentine in all aspects.
Virgil van Dijk- Of course, not as highly-rated as Bonucci, but the Dutch enforcer has been tremendously impressive for English club Southampton this season. At 25, van Dijk has shown the big clubs how defending is done in the most flawless manner. His game reading abilities and offensive attributes are better than many forwards and his big frame also makes him a real threat from set-pieces.
Michael Keane- When Pep Guardiola is trying hard to land him at Etihad, it speaks volumes of the player. The 24-year-old has been yet another revelation in the English Premier league this season. At a time when getting established players has become a very difficult task, which often ends up with clubs spending astronomical amounts, Keane could be a cheap and durable option for Barcelona. A perfect no-nonsense centre-half, the Burnley defender has earned rave reviews from across the world.
