Wolverhampton Wanderers haven’t been anything out-of-the-world, but then, they haven’t been completely obsolete either. Paul Lambert planned Liverpool’s downfall in what was arguably the standout result in the fourth round of the FA Cup and the team have been finding their feet in the Championship lately.
Though the play-off spots are a distant dream, they can at least try to push themselves up the ladder. They had a decent January transfer window and let’s have a look at how good they are.
Andreas Weimann (7/10)
A loan deal for Weimann from Derby County, this move is more of a gamble, but chances are high that it will pay off. He is a proven attacker who has good work-rate, is a neat finisher, and is never in doubt when on the ball. But he has been erratic every season, denting his place in the side. However, he might get the opportunity of playing through the middle under Lambert’s setup and it is a great chance for him to redeem himself.
Ben Marshall (7/10)
Marshall was signed on the deadline day from Blackburn Rovers and has all the ingredients to elevate the quality in Wolves’ ranks. The 25-year-old has 309 career appearances under his belt and plays an impeccable role in shielding the side.
Besides, he is versatile enough and creates plenty of chances as well. He was a player Wolves wanted to sign for a long time and now that they have him, he could very well be the platform for them to construct their side structure upon.
Helder Costa (9/10)
Remember Wolverhampton Wanderers’ scintillating win over Liverpool in the fourth round of the FA Cup recently in which Jurgen Klopp’s men were stunned by the underdogs and Helder Costa in particular? The Portuguese manhandled Liverpool with exceptional quality and brilliance as he was a livewire.
The 23-year-old was plying his trade on loan from Benfica, but then Lambert knew there would be no dearth of buyers queuing up for him in the summer owing to the appreciable asset he has been.
Costa became the club’s record signing when his stay at Molineux was made permanent in a £13 million deal. He has made 25 appearances for the side this term so far, bagging 7 goals, 5 assists, completing 317 passes and not to forget that he was also the architect of 34 chances. Without any shadow of a doubt, securing Costa’s services for a long term implies that the Championship side have a really classy attacker in their ranks.
